The owl was the emblem of the Greek goddess Athena, a symbol of intelligence, agility and cunning, and the artists at Lladró chose it to be part of the Boldblack collection.

In this series, the animals are made of black porcelain and only a few touches of gold luster are used for decoration. The effect produced by these creations is striking. Both because of the decoration and because the matte porcelain realization emphasizes the sculpture forms and carvings. In this owl in particular, the faithful reproduction of the face and the painstaking work in recreating the plumage and wood of the trunk stand out.
